1 Sunday of Advent ‘a’

“Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” On this first Sunday of Advent, we hear again about being ready, prepared, staying awake because the Lord is coming and that this may happen any time. But most of us don’t take this warning seriously, since so many centuries have passed, and He didn’t come yet. Most likely it will take many more centuries before the Lord comes again. So, yes, I am aware of that. But in the back of my head, I think that I have time, lots of time. Well, here comes another season of Advent into my life. Perhaps I will not witness the second coming of the Lord to this earth. But one day, I will leave this world and I don’t know when. Am I ready for that - now, today? In some sense, the blessed are those who know that their end is coming, e.g., those who are old or sick, because they take Jesus’s warnings seriously and prepare themselves for Him. We don’t know the time nor the hour. We may think that we have a lot of time ahead of us, but do we? This is not about being scared, but about being prepared. If you are prepared then you have nothing to worry about.
