18 Sunday in ordinary time ‘b’

“Sir, give us this bread always. Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” I am sure that the people who came to Jesus were shocked by this statement. They wanted Jesus to give them the bread that would provide life, eternal life, and most likely they expected a nice loaf of bread that they would consume and that’s it- they will live forever. But Jesus continues and says: “I am the bread of life.” What??? What does he mean? He is bread? He doesn’t look like bread, and we don’t eat people. But it is more than only consuming. Of course, today Jesus is present in the Eucharist, and we eat His Body and drink His Blood, but I think that Jesus wants us to desire Him, to need Him, to be united with Him. He is like Bread that we can’t live without in this life and so we can’t live eternally without Jesus. We need to be hungry for Jesus, and only then we will need Him.
