Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Ahead of us are 40 days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. So, why do you pray? Why do you fast, and why do you help others? Jesus reminds us today that while we pray, fast, and give alms, we need to do these not to show others how good a Christian we are, but because of our love for God and His people. Some rich people of this world do great and charitable things in order to help others, but then they also want all of the publicity that comes with it. They have received their reward, a reward of this life. Jesus tells us today, at the beginning of this Lent, that we should expect the reward for our good deeds and holy life, but not from others, but from God Himself -- a reward of life eternal. Have a blessed and fruitful season of Lent.
