It is interesting that when we sin, when we have done something wrong, we would rather keep all that in secret. However, when we do something good, we would always like others to know about it and to give us some kind of credit. Today on Ash Wednesday we are reminded that whatever good deed we do, it should be done simply out of love for another person, not for some kind of publicity nor credit. “And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.” God can see everything. He can penetrate our souls and knows exactly what is going in there, even before we act. We might be ashamed of our wrongdoings, and so we would rather keep that in secret. But -- guess what: “your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.” And in the same way, when we perform a good deed for another person and we do it in secret from other people, then: “your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”
