Feast for St. James, Apostle

I like the mother of the two brothers of Zebedee. I must admit that when I first read this gospel, I was surprised and even shocked with her bold and selfish request of Jesus: “Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your Kingdom.” However, after more reflection, I realized that this was a very wise request. Mothers want all that is best for their children, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons was no different. And what always surprises me, she didn’t ask for anything of this world, like health, power, success, safety, riches. She didn’t even ask for anything for herself. No! Instead, she wants to make sure that their sons are saved, are in Heaven. Ok, maybe she went a little too far by asking to secure their places next to the Lord on His left and right side. But she only wanted eternal life for her sons. Most of us would pray and ask for things of this world. But how many times do we pray to God, asking Him to welcome us and our relatives into His Kingdom?
