Feast of St. Stephen, First Martyr

Writer's picture: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

Today in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we read about St. Stephen, first martyr. We learn that: “Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people.” However, some came to Stephen and “debated with Stephen, but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.” Obviously, it was the Holy Spirit who spoke through that great martyr and deacon. That’s why Stephen wasn’t afraid to speak the truth, the truth that cost him his life. And when we read the gospel, we know that Jesus predicted what would happen to His disciples: “you will be hated by all because of my name.” We may not be called to become martyrs and give up our lives for the gospel. However, we need to be ready to face rejection because of our faith. Some will question us, even those whom we love and are close to us - why do you do that, why do you pray, why do you go to church? “Do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”
