Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, Apostle

Writer's picture: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

Jesus knew that He would not stay with the disciples for much longer. He had to go back to His Father, but He wanted to have someone that He could trust, a person who would take care of this newly established Church. Jesus needed a leader. So, what does He do? He tests the disciples, trying to figure out if they pay attention to His teaching, if they observe His actions, if they can learn and mature, and finally if they can listen to God. It seemed like only Simon had those qualities, and only he was able to hear God talking to him. That’s why Jesus praises him, saying: “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.” So, I am questioning myself today: do I observe, pay attention, and finally listen to God like Simon did? Because if I do, then I can be greatly rewarded; but if not, I can miss a great opportunity.
