Every so often I would talk to someone who thinks that certain unfortunate events that happens in his or her life are because God is punishing them for their sins from the past. That was also an Old Testament belief, that God is angry, God will punish you, God will condemn you if you don’t follow His law. No, God is not punishing us for ours past sins. God loves us too much to do that. Yes, our sins separate us from His love, not because He stops loving us, but simply that, because of our sins, we are lacking in that love. Today Jesus tells Nicodemus: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” Jesus came to save us, because God loves us.
