I am sure you know that church song with the refrain: “and they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love. Yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love.” I bet this is going to stay in your head for today, just like in my head… Anyway, the lyrics are not just made up for us, but those are the exact words that our Lord Jesus used in the Gospel reading for this Sunday. He said: “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Jesus doesn’t want your big declaration that you are a Christian, He doesn’t want you to put a sticker on your bumper with words ‘I believe!’ He doesn’t care if you have a beautiful crucifix around your neck. He also doesn’t want you to say a rosary every day and go to church on Sunday if you have no love for another person. All these symbols and religious practices are very important, but they become meaningless if we have no love. Only if we have love, then others will be able to recognize that we are disciples of Jesus.
