A routine can be a dangerous thing, especially when it comes to our religious practices and spiritual exercises. It is because when we get into a routine of practicing our religion, we may not be able to grow, to go deeper. We may not be able to find anything new in Jesus’ teaching. Holy mass, the Eucharist, that we celebrate each Sunday or even every day is the center of our religion. However, if we go to Mass often, we can easily forget how essential the Eucharist is. Even I, a priest, need to challenge myself, to slow down and remember that holy mass is not just another ‘mass’, but it is that special moment when Christ comes to us in word and in the sacrament. We all need to be careful not to become like those people from Jesus’s native place who couldn’t understand that Jesus, who they knew even from His childhood, is the Son of God. They questioned Him: “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter's son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?” I think that sometimes we ask similar questions, like -- what else can I hear in the church, what else can I learn? There is nothing new there for me anymore. Yes there is. You just need to slow down and to look deeper; you need to let Christ come to you and open your eyes, your ears, and your heart.
