Friday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary time ‘b’

We may think that we know Jesus well, or that we have heard everything about Him. We may also know what He can do for us, what to ask Him for, and what prayers He will not answer to. Perhaps you keep praying for peace, but at the same time you know in your heart that there will never be peace on this earth. Or you prayed for a healing of a loved one, but you knew that there is no help for him or her. Aren’t we like Jesus’ friends from His native place? This is what they said to each other: “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this man get all this?” And they took offense at him. We read at the end that because of their lack of faith, Jesus couldn’t perform miracles there. See, sometimes we are praying to Jesus, knowing that what we are asking for is too much, and He won’t grant us what we need. We think we know Jesus too well and what He is capable of doing and what He won’t do. Lack of faith! While praying, let us always believe in Jesus’ power.
