Friday of the Twenty Second Week in Ordinary Time ‘b’

One of the beautiful symbols during the sacrament of baptism is a white garment. That garment symbolizes a new life, a life with Christ, as a child of God. Before the white garment is placed on a newly baptized person, the minister of the sacrament says, “You have become a new creation, and have clothed yourself in Christ.” In our tradition the most common custom is to baptize infants. However, when an adult receives this first and most important sacrament, these words receive a deeper meaning. You are a new person, a new creation - leave what is old behind you and now follow the path of Christ. When Jesus used the analogy of old wine and new wine skins and when He said that “No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one,” He tells us that with Him everything is new. We can’t follow Him partially, we can’t look back, we shouldn’t lead our former sinful life. No! Now we are newly changed people and we have new commandments to follow.
