One priest told me once that if I read the bible, or whenever I pray, when I meditate on the word of God, when I participate in bible studies and talk with others about God’s message, I will develop something that is called ‘spiritual ears’ which is like a help from the Holy Spirit to see and hear deeper the voice of God. Very often, including in today’s gospel reading, Jesus would conclude His preaching by saying: “whoever has ears ought to hear.” So, He is not referring only to our ears and to our ability to listen, but for us to go deeper, beyond that. Jesus wants us to listen, to hear, and to understand His message. We will be able to do that only when the Holy Spirit guides us and opens for us our ‘spiritual ears’. “Whoever has ears ought to hear.” Can you hear God speaking to you, do you understand His message? If not, ask the Holy Spirit to open your ears. There were many who were privileged to look and to listen to Jesus, but they couldn’t really see or hear Him.
