“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Martha expressed the same disappointment we might also express after losing someone to death. You prayed to God asking to keep that relative of yours healthy and alive. However, that person still died. What did you feel then? Disappointment, anger maybe? Did you too question God -- why didn’t you listen to me? why did you allow this to happen, God? If you had been here, my brother, my sister, my spouse, my mother, my father, or my beloved child would not have died! I learn today that there is nothing wrong with being angry or disappointed and with asking these important questions. However, it would be wrong to lose the faith. Jesus brought Lazarus back to life and He will keep our relatives alive too. But from now on, they will have a much better life: “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”
