Memorial of St. Augustin, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Today once again Jesus calls the religious leaders of His time ‘hypocrites’. He calls them this since some of them, instead of humbly serving their flock, and being the bridges which connect people with God, abused peoples’ trust and were only worried about their own selfish gain, higher positions, or financial rewards. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth.” Many of us have been hurt by the sins and scandals of our clergy and leaders of our church. Some wonderful people left our church because of people like that. But we need to understand that there is sin in the church It has always been so and it will always attack our church in the future. We need to pray for the sinners, we need to ask God for good, faithful leaders for our church - like Saint Augustine - and make sure that we are always honest and humble servants of God.
