Martha and Mary -- two women who represent two different kinds of spirituality. One is ‘doer’ and the other one is ‘listener’. So, the question is, which one is better? Which one should you or I become? You know this story well, you know that Martha wants to serve the Lord in action by taking care of Him, making sure He is welcomed and well served. Mary on the other hand prefers just to be with the Lord and listen to Him. She wants to remain quiet and enjoy the presence of Christ. So, which one is better? Yet even though the Lord tells Martha that she should relax and not to worry, to slow down and listen to Him like Mary, the message for us is that we should sort of become like both of them, a little like Mary and a little like Martha. There is time when we just need to stop, slow down, be quiet, and listen to our Lord, rejoicing in His presence. But then we also need to act and serve the Lord in our brothers and sisters. We are called to listen and to serve.
