Lord, please help me, I need your help. I am very sick. Can you please heal me? Sure, no problem, but I can’t do it today, because today is Sunday, and I am taking my day off. Please come tomorrow. Maybe this sounds funny, but it seems like this is exactly what the Pharisees and scribes expected Jesus to do. Today is the Sabbath, a holy day, no work can be done, so you can’t heal anybody today. Let them come after Sabbath, but not today. And I think today Jesus gave them the most beautiful explanation: “I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” If you and I have an opportunity to do something good, to help others, we should do that no matter what. If someone needs your help, you shouldn’t make excuses or procrastinate, but go and help. We should always seek to do good to others even on a holy day.
