Dear Lord, if you heal my sick mom, I will go to mass every day. Jesus, if you help me to get that promotion, I will donate money to the poor. God, if You…, but if not…, then I will stop going to church; if You don’t grant me what I want, then I will stop believing in You. Aren’t we like that sometimes? Hoping that God will give us what we want, testing Him by saying that we will do something for Him in exchange. That is exactly what the Pharisees did. “The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with Jesus, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.” We can’t be testing God; we can’t ask Him to give us a sign, and then we will believe. We already have enough signs and proofs that God exists and loves us. We need to pray with humility, believing that He knows what is best for us. “Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
