Monday of the Eight Week in Ordinary Time ‘b’

I think most priests would agree with me that every so often there will be a person that comes to confession and says things like: Father, I have been to confession a year ago, but now I am back because it’s Easter, but I don’t really know what to confess. I don’t steal, I didn’t kill anybody, I don’t cheat, I pray and go to Mass every Sunday. So, I don’t really know what to say. This is exactly like with the man who approached Jesus and asked Him what to do to inherit eternal life. And what Jesus said might be shocking to many of us, and certainly it was shocking to that man. Jesus said that it is not enough only to follow the commandments. That is important, but it is only the minimum. What we need to do, we need to ‘sell everything we have and give it to the poor.’ “At that statement, his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.” No, we don’t have to take these words literally and go and give away everything we have and become poor and dependent. No. What Jesus wants from His disciples is to take care of others, share with them what we have, and not be self-centered. Most of us follow the ten commandments, but Jesus wants more from us. We are called to love our neighbor.
