Monday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary time ‘a’

Today’s gospel reading begins like this: “When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself.” This may not seem very significant; however, I find it very interesting. It helps me recognize that very human side of our Lord. He was sad after He heard that John the Baptist was killed, He grieved, maybe He even cried. For that moment Jesus wanted to grieve alone, be only by himself. It is always good to be surrounded by our loved ones and friends, especially in the moment of grieving. It is comforting to have them around, to pray together and to grieve together, but sometimes we just need to go away to pray and to grieve alone.
