Being a Christian is to go beyond what we know, beyond what we have gotten used to. Being a Christian means to be generous to others and give not only what we have in plenty but even more – to give what others need. That’s why today’s gospel starts with these words of Jesus: You have heard that it was said, do this or that, but I tell you -- do even more, much more. There are many rich and powerful people in this world who are very generous in giving to others, but they still can control how much they give, so it won’t hurt their savings. However, Jesus reminds us that His disciple must go beyond that, even if we struggle, or don’t have enough. We can’t turn away from the person in need, but we must share what we have.
