Monday of the Fourth Week of Lent ‘b’

Writer: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

We all know some people who, whenever they say something to us, we know that it is true. Those people have proven to us that we can always rely on them and on their word. We don’t need extra confirmation, any proof; we just know the person and we are certain that they would never make things up and would never lie. But we also know individuals who make promises to us but never fulfill them, or they tell us stories that are hard to believe. It is hard to have faith in people like that since we never know when they are telling the truth and when they are making things up. What Jesus wants from us is our faith. It is that faith that doesn’t need any proof of what He is saying to us. We simply are called to believe in every word that comes from Jesus. He would never lie to us, and He would never make things up to gain fame nor to get more followers. Just like in the gospel story for today when Jesus said to that royal official whose son was dying: “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” Those who witnessed that situation didn’t believe in Jesus’ word - that his son will live. They wanted proof, they wanted to see it happen, they didn’t believe in God’s word. The royal official was different. He didn’t need any more words of affirmation, he knew that he could totally trust in the word of the Lord. “Jesus said to him, ‘You may go; your son will live.’ The man believed what Jesus said to him and left.” We need to keep asking God to increase our faith.
