Monday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time ‘a’

Which of your possessions are you most afraid of losing, or which can’t you let go of? A young man approached Jesus and asked Him what he should do to gain eternal life. So, Jesus explained to Him that besides following the commandments, he needed to let go of his possessions. But “he went away sad, for he had many possessions.” When I read this, I think about the material goods that this young man owned. However, when I think deeper about it, I realize that what Jesus means is that if I want to inherit eternal life, or go to heaven as we say, then I must empty my heart from those unworthy possessions and make room for God. These will be my temptations, my sinful pleasures that I don’t want to get rid of, my addictions, my bad behaviors, sinful actions and many more things. It is hard to let go of all those things, but this is the only option to inherit eternal life. We can either go away sad, just like that young man, or empty ourselves from those sinful possessions and go to heaven.
