Monday of the Twenty Ninth Week in Ordinary Time ‘b’

Jesus’ parable from the gospel reading reminds us about the importance of sharing what we have with others. That very rich man, whose land produced a bountiful harvest, didn’t know what to do with so many goods. So, he decided to build a huge barn and store his goods for the future. For now - he said - I don’t have to work anymore, “I have many good things stored up for many years, so I can rest, eat, drink, be merry.” This man didn’t do anything wrong. In fact, he deserved to enjoy the fruit of his work. However, even for a moment, he did not think about those who are poor, hungry, or those who need help. The rich man selfishly wanted to keep everything for himself, even when he had more than he needed. “But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.” And what matters to God? If that man shared his goods with those in need, that would certainly matter to our God! There is nothing wrong with saving, taking care of our future. However, we also need to open our eyes and notice those who may need our help, those with whom we should share the things we are blessed with. That would matter to God.
