Monday of the Twenty Seventh Week in Ordinary Time ‘a’

Today Jesus reminds us that in order to inherit eternal life we must do two things: Love God and love our neighbor. It seems so easy at first, but there are so many moments when we fail to express our love to God and to others. Or there are times when we justify ourselves thinking that we have done enough. We said enough prayers, we went to Mass each Sunday, we tried to be good to others and to support many charities. You might even have given some change to that poor person begging on the street. But is all this enough? When that scholar of the law asked Jesus what to do to inherit eternal life, he heard that he must love God and neighbor. And right after that we read: “But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?’” He didn’t expect that Jesus would tell Him that loving others goes beyond our comfort zone, beyond what we think is right. We must love and respect every human being, even those who don’t love us back. Don’t justify yourself; do more!
