There are some very busy days at my parish. Meetings, masses, wedding ceremonies, sometimes a funeral, preparing homilies, and other things and events that make me quite tired. And usually when it gets so busy, on top of it, I would get a phone call to come and visit a sick person or a dying person with the sacrament of the sick. And instead of going right away, I look for excuses. I ask questions like: is it urgent? or, could this wait until tomorrow? Or, I might say: you live in another parish, this is too far for me, so call your own parish priest. It is easy to find excuses and not to go right away. Today Jesus reminds us that if another person is in need of our help or attention, we must leave everything and help that person. No excuses. Jesus did heal that poor man on a Sabbath. He knew that the well-being of another person is much more important than any other customs, laws, or regulations. “The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him.”
