Expectations. We all have them -- about other people, about TV shows, about a music concert, about our vacations. We expect things to go a certain way and if they do not, we end up being disappointed or even angry. Because the movie wasn’t as good as expected, or the hotel you stayed at wasn’t as good as it looked on the photos, or that new boss at your workplace turned out to be very unfriendly. 2000 years ago, people also had a different expectation of the coming of the promised Messiah. Most of them simply didn’t expect Him to come in such a simple way, as a man who looked just like them. That’s why when John the Baptist announced Him, many didn’t believe, and they still didn’t believe when Jesus came. They got upset when Jesus told them that He is the promised Son of God. Jesus said: “I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also, will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.” What are your expectations of God? We need to be careful not to expect too much or something different; otherwise we may miss Him in our midst.
