Joseph was a good and noble man. He also loved Mary very much. But he must have been very puzzled to find out that Mary his wife was pregnant. Most people would get very upset, some wouldn’t even try to understand, and some would never forgive, but Joseph was different. And what is shocking to me is that, when I read the Gospel for today, I see that Joseph indeed wanted to divorce Mary, but not because of his anger and disappointment, but because he truly loved her, respected her, and never wanted to expose her to shame. “Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.” It was never about him nor his desires but about his wife. He cared about her and never wanted to expose her to shame. We all can and should learn so much from Joseph, but mostly that we show respect to another person.
