A man came up to Jesus, knelt down before him, and said, “Lord, have pity on my son, who is a lunatic and suffers severely; often he falls into fire, and often into water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him.” What really strikes me in this gospel reading is the trust which that poor father had in Jesus’ disciples. For some reason he didn’t ask Jesus for help first, instead he asked Jesus’ disciples. Maybe he didn’t want to bother Jesus; maybe it was too difficult to get closer to Jesus. We don’t know. All we know is that this man, whose son was possessed, expected those who were close to Jesus to help him. I think today is no different. If we call ourselves Christians, others would expect us to do the work that Jesus did. If you are calling yourself Jesus’ disciple today, then you must be like Jesus to those you meet. You need to share Jesus’ love with everyone.
