Today we read: “Jesus no longer walked about in public among the Jews, but he left for the region near the desert, to a town called Ephraim, and there he remained with his disciples.” This scripture passage makes me think about the world today and about our times -- is Jesus welcomed here? can He be present in public spaces? Our society would rather want us to keep Jesus, to keep God, to ourselves. Keep your religion out of our schools, politics, symbols, and places of work. Don’t pray in public, don’t make the sign of the cross, don’t talk about Jesus -- this is your belief, so keep it to yourself. The Gospel for today reminds me that our world is not so much different than 2000 years ago when Jesus was not welcomed by many. Are we able to witness in public that we are Christians? Are we courageous enough to speak about Jesus, to pray, and to defend our beliefs?
