When I read today’s Gospel, I realize something new. I realize that Jesus is telling me that true humility will make me free. How? It will make me free from my selfish desires, and it will make me free from many disappointments. Think about that. If you are a humble person, you don’t have big expectations regarding yourself, you are simply happy and thankful for what you have. Others may desire special titles, positions in life; they may spend their energy trying to gain fame, and then when their plans don't succeed, they end up being frustrated and angry. Jesus’ story today tells us that we should always desire a lower place because it is an honor and blessing to be asked by the host “my friend, move up to a higher position,” rather of choosing a higher position and then be moved to a lower position because “a more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him. And the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, 'Give your place to this man,' and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.” True humility will make us free, will make us happy, will make us appreciate all we have and appreciate even more the blessings we did not expect.
