Most people would follow God’s call if He promised them happiness, health, freedom, riches, prosperity, many friends, and all those things that we desire in life. If only God promised us that He would protect us from evil and make our lives happy. Then following Him would not be a difficult thing to do. However, that is not the case. Instead of all the blessings of this life, God warns us many times that His followers will be persecuted, ridiculed, they will suffer, and may even be killed for their faith. Well, this is not what most would expect, and that’s why many people reject God’s call. Today I look at St. Joseph, a perfect model of total obedience to God’s call. Again, God didn’t tell him that it would be easy staying with Mary and taking care of her and her Son. We all know how much St. Joseph had to suffer and give up, but he never said ‘no’. He literally gave up his life for Christ, and today he is rewarded with the highest prize -- he is in heaven because he accepted God’s call. For us, being a Christian may not be easy, and we might need to give up certain things because of our faith. But that is exactly what we are called to do. We may not be rewarded in this life, but we will be rewarded in the life to come.
