Thanksgiving Day

Writer's picture: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

On this Thanksgiving Day, the church presents us with a very familiar gospel story. The story about ten lepers who begged Jesus to cleanse them. Jesus did what they asked for. However, only one Samaritan came back to the Lord to give Him thanks, to show his gratitude. When I evaluate my personal prayer, I often realize that most the times I keep praying for something, asking God to do what I want. I keep asking for a good and blessed day, for example: or for health for me and my relatives. I pray for safety, or I keep asking God to help me find a solution to some problems and issues I may have. And there is nothing wrong with asking God to help us; we should keep asking Him for the help we need. But how many times do we come back to Him to show our gratitude for what He did? I often forget to thank Him, but I continue asking for His help. The story from today’s gospel shows us that God also ‘appreciates’ when we are able to recognize the blessings He bestows upon us daily and when we take some time in a prayer and simply thank Him for that.
