Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ‘a’

Writer's picture: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

Today Jesus tells us that, “Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward.” So, what does He mean by this, and why would He say that? So, Jesus simply wants to tell us that if we please only those from whom we could receive something in return - from people in power, influential people, rich people, or people with connections - if we please them just to gain something, we may end up gaining the gift but only of things of this world. However, we Christians need to look toward the Heavenly reward, a reward from God. How can we receive that reward from God? Jesus says: “whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple— amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” We need to take care of those who are in need first. These are the ones who may not be able to repay us, but God will.
