Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ‘b’

Once again today, Jesus proves to us that He is the Lord of the living, not of the dead. Only He has the power to restore life and to bring the dead back to life. Just like that little girl, Jairus’ daughter. Jesus will bring to life our beloved dead too. All we need is to have faith. Jesus tells you today: “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” But wait a second - you may think - how is this possible? Wasn’t my faith sufficient when I prayed for my husband who died, for my sick wife and she died too? I prayed for that child to be safe, and God took him or her away from me. I prayed for my parents to live but my mom died, my dad died. Don’t I have enough faith? Besides, I don’t know of anyone else that didn’t lose a loved one. So, what does Jesus’ mean? What Jesus means is that we all are called to live in heaven. Heaven is our ultimate destiny. This world is a passing world, and we all are only pilgrims in this world. That little girl, even though she was brought back to life by Jesus, eventually had to die once again because nobody will live in this world forever. What we must long for is the eternal life in heaven, and we must desire the same for our loved ones who have died. So, when we pray for them, when we offer Mass intentions, we don’t ask Jesus to bring them back to this life. No. We ask the Lord to bring them to life, but to a much better life, life eternal, a life without any sadness, pain, tears. Jesus is the Lord of the living. So let us often pray for our relatives and friends who died so they may receive that most wonderful life from God. “Do not be afraid; just have faith.”
