Thursday in the Octave of Easter

There are times when I read the bible and then after some time, I realize that I turned a page or two but don’t know what I just read. My thoughts were somewhere else. That may happen not only during reading, but also while praying, or during mass. Some people have shared with me that they couldn’t pay attention and were distracted in prayer, during scripture reading, or during mass. What to do to prevent this from happening? Someone told me that each time before taking a rosary or reading the scripture or any other form of prayer, she asks the Holy Spirit to guide her, to help her focus, and to not get distracted. The disciples couldn’t recognize Jesus after the resurrection simply because they didn’t believe that He was raised from the tomb. They didn’t remember the scriptures they had read many times before; they were too distracted. Jesus “opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” We need to constantly ask the Holy Spirit to open our hearts and minds. Otherwise, we too will be as confused as those disciples.
