Shocking words in the Gospel today. Jesus says: “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, not peace but rather division.” How come? we may ask. Isn’t Jesus called the Prince of Peace? Now he is speaking about bringing division among people. I also find this passage hard to understand; but look around us, look at our world. Aren’t the various wars and division most often caused by religions, mainly because others still can’t accept Jesus and Christianity. I know several families where one person is being ridiculed because she is very devoted to her faith. Or sometimes at work others may have made fun of you because you said that you go church every Sunday or pray before your meal. “A father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother.” Yes, Jesus brought division into this world, but if we persevere, He promises us never ending and eternal peace.
