Thursday of the Fourth Week of Lent ‘a’

Jesus said: “Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father: the one who will accuse you is Moses, in whom you have placed your hope. For if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?” It seems like the Jews to whom Jesus addressed these words, only selectively read what the prophets foretold. Perhaps they only wanted to hear and accept what was easy to agree to. but everything else was very difficult to follow, and so they avoided it. Isn’t that like today with many of us Christians? Whatever is good and comfortable and easy to follow in Christ’s teaching, most of us would follow. But when He calls us to sacrifice, to love, to share, to forgive, to live according to moral values, then some of us say -- Yes, I believe in God, but not in the Church’s teaching. Our Church holds the traditions and continues the mission of Christ. We can either follow Christ’s teaching fully, or we are not following it at all.
