Sometimes it is not about what you did, but about what you didn’t do. I think about this often when I hear the parable about the rich man and poor Lazarus. The rich man didn’t do anything wrong. He lived his wealthy life, enjoyed his money and possessions. Perhaps he earned everything he had by honest work, so he deserved what he had. However, he was condemned for what he didn’t do, namely, he didn’t see that poor and homeless Lazarus was starving and that the rich man did not do anything about it. He didn’t use that opportunity to do something good toward another person. When we make our examination of conscience, we often think about those sins we have committed, abut our wrongdoings. However, today Jesus wants you to make another examination of conscience and ask yourself about those moments when you could have done something good to others, but you ignored it or pretended that you didn’t see that person who needed your assistance and help.
