Thursday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time ‘b’

When I was younger, I played different sports, but I was particularly good in soccer. To this day I love watching soccer games, and I still play with some friends once or twice a week - great fun. I remember when I started high school, I signed up for the soccer team. There were many of us kids that came 3-4 times a week for practice. Each one of us tried very hard to improve our skills and to not miss any training, since only the best players were chosen to represent the team and play in the tournaments. Just imagine - there are about 40 kids coming and practicing but only eleven can play the game. So, the coach tried to select only the best players, who were those who worked very hard and never missed training. These were selected to play the game. Today Jesus said that “many are invited, but few are chosen.” His words remind me about my soccer team - many of us were invited to practice, but only a few were chosen to represent the team and play the game. In a similar way, everyone is invited to follow Jesus, to come to church, to receive the sacraments… but is that enough? I don’t think so. Besides being invited by the Lord, we need to do our part. We must work hard and prove to Jesus that we are worthy of being His disciples and worthy to have been chosen by Him.
