Thursday- The Fifth Day in the Octave of Christmas

Today we read that the Holy Family brought baby Jesus to the temple to present Him to the Lord “just as it is written in the law of the Lord, every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.” What caught my attention is the fact that according to the law they had to offer a sacrifice for the temple. The temple could only exist because of people’s sacrifices and offerings. And there is not much difference today. Our churches can only stay open as long as we support them with our donations. But whenever we donate to our church, there is a deeper meaning to this --- when we give, we make a sacrifice. That means that we learn how to free ourselves from any greed or selfishness. Even the Holy Family had to make a sacrifice and make an offering to the temple. Are you open to make sacrifices and support your temple?
