Tuesday of the 28 week in ordinary time ‘b’

With the current situation of the pandemic, we have been reminded repeatedly to wear masks, keep social distance, and to wash and sanitize our hands often. There are even applications that you can download on your smartphone that will remind you when to wash your hands. I catch myself on being almost obsessed with washing and sanitizing hands. Why we do that? Simple- we want to prevent ourselves from getting the virus and from spreading the virus. We want to remain clean and healthy. This is all very important. But today Jesus reminds us that besides taking care of externals we need to even more make sure that we are clean and healthy inside. Jesus said: “Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and evil.” We simply can’t become like those Pharisees, making sure that we follow the rules and regulations of sanitizing our hands, but then we forget that our souls must be holy, pure and healthy.
