God doesn’t want just our beautiful and profound declarations and promises. What He cares about is our action. How many times do we say to God, for example, I am sorry, I will never do that again, I will never hurt that person anymore, and I will pray more, and I will start going to church, I will help the poor and quit drinking… but then we forget about our promises and do it again and again? It is exactly like with the second son from the Gospel reading for today, who said that he will do the will of his father, but then he ended up not fulfilling his promise. Instead, God wants us to be like the first son, who even though he originally said ‘No’, he changed his mind and started working. It is not about our promises and declarations but about fulfilling God’s will.
