Does God punish us for our sins? There are moments in life when we begin to think like that, especially when everything goes wrong, or when we lose someone we loved very much. What did I do to deserve this? we may wonder. Why is God punishing me? There is a scene in the Gospel today that shows us another miracle done by Jesus who healed a sick man, but after that miracle Jesus warns him: “Look, you are well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse may happen to you.” So, what is going on? Jesus is warning us that if we sin, something worse may happen to us. What? I think that Jesus is talking about is eternal condemnation. No, God doesn’t punish us here in this life. When Jesus said that something worse may happen if we continue sinning and don’t repent, He means that we will not go to Heaven. This is the worst thing that may happen to us. Yes, we struggle in this life, but this is not God’s punishment; God does not punish us like that. Jesus is warning us that something worse may happen. but that will be the consequence of our own choices, not God’s punishment.
