A few of our gospel readings from previous days begin in a similar way. They begin with Jesus’ words which state: “you have heard that it was said…”, and then the Lord continues: “but I say to you…” do it in a different way. We live in an era of so many ‘voices’ constantly telling us how to live, what to buy, where to invest. Those voices are all trying to tell us what is good and what is bad, or whom to follow and who is deceiving us. It is very difficult to have trust today in our leaders, even the leaders of our church. They may be preaching to us how to live, but they themselves do it otherwise. So, where to turn, whom to listen to? Exactly -- Jesus Himself. He loves us and wants only the best for us, and He will give us always the best advice for our lives. Just like today, Jesus reminds us: “You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.” It is not what others are saying; it is about the words of our God.
