Tuesday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time ‘b’

After some Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus and asking Him if they should pay taxes to the occupant - to Caesar - Jesus simply said: “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” This was so clever! When I hear this, I think about the lawmakers of today who try to implement the laws that would allow people to decide when and how to end human life. I think about those who promote abortion or euthanasia. Then I go back to what Jesus said -- return to God what belongs to God. God gave us life and that life belongs to Him. Only God can decide when and how to end our life here on earth. We are not allowed to make those decisions. We are still pilgrims here. So while on our journey, we have obligations towards our planet, our countries, and our communities. But we also have obligations towards our God, so we must give Him what belongs to Him.
