It happens quite often that when I hear someone’s confession, especially if they come to ask for God’s forgiveness after many years, after they receive absolution, I hear from them: Father, it feels so good, or I am glad I came, that sin was a burden to me, and now I feel free. Perhaps you have experienced something like that. We come to God in the sacrament of forgiveness and in other ways to ask for His mercy. Then after we are forgiven, we feel much better, like we have received new energy, we feel joy and freedom. However, have you ever wondered how our Lord feels when we come to Him, especially when we get back after a long time being away from faith? We don’t think about that often because most times we focus on ourselves and on our relationship with Jesus. And today Jesus reminds us that whenever we turn to Him, whenever we come back and ask for His mercy then: “he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.” Not only are we the ones who experience a great joy with finding God, but He rejoices even more.
