I like this gospel reading. I like Jesus’ answer to the person who told Him that “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak with you.” And Jesus said that whoever does the will of God becomes a member of His family. I like that response because Jesus did not create any divisions among us. He could have said for example -- only those who speak my language are my friends and family, or only those who belong to my culture, or only those who have the same color of skin as mine, or only men, only women, only young or only old. Jesus did not make any divisions. Instead, He said that we become His family members only by fulfilling God’s will. This is important for us Christians today since many times we create these kinds of divisions based on our differences. Christ is different. He welcomes us to become His brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and friends not because we have certain skills or we come from certain places, or not because we are more educated or powerful. These things do not mean much to the Lord. Wherever we are, whoever we are, wherever we come from, whatever language we speak, or whatever color of skin we have, we are called to become Jesus’ brothers and sisters by doing God’s will.
