Once again today we hear the words of warning addressed to the religious leaders who pretend to be pious and holy, but they have sinful and selfish intentions. Woe to you, who take advantage of your religious leadership only for your own gain, but not for God’s people and His Church. Perhaps you too were disappointed or even heartbroken that a priest or bishop you trusted so much, who celebrated the liturgy beautifully and respectfully, who preached with such passion and always prayed, ended up scandalizing others. God knows what’s inside of each one of us. We can fool others, but we will never fool God. Let’s pray for good and holy religious leaders in our communities. “You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.”
