Tuesday of the Twenty Third Week in Ordinary Time ‘b’

Today in the gospel, Jesus chooses His first twelve disciples. When we think about those people, we imagine them as great saints, martyrs, and some of them even evangelists. We think of them as those people who reached the highest level of sanctity, people who are so great that they are by comparison with us, and very distant and aloof. However, when Jesus originally called their names, they were just like you and I - very simple, hardworking people, people with not much education, and people who were sinners just as we are. Nevertheless, Jesus called them to become His disciples. He didn’t choose any of the religious authorities, nor those with high education, He didn’t even choose people of power. He chose simple people, sinful people, and He gave them a chance to become some of the greatest saints ever. We know that eleven took advantage of that opportunity, but Judas Iscariot did not. In a similar way today, the Lord calls us to become His disciples. He looks at you and calls your name. This is a great privilege but also a great responsibility. We too have a chance to become like those eleven.
